Imi Lo — Emotional sensitivity, intensity & being wired differently

What if the traits you've spent your life trying to manage, your sensitivity, your intensity, your depth, were never the problem to begin with?

About Imi Lo

Imi Lo is a psychotherapist and author whose work explores the lives of emotionally sensitive and intense people, those who feel deeply, think in complex ways, and often struggle to find environments that can hold them. She holds master's degrees in mental health and Buddhist studies and has spent over a decade asking one central question: what do emotionally sensitive and intense people actually need? Her books Emotional Sensitivity and Intensity and The Gift of Intensity offer a warm, rigorous framework for understanding a rich but often misunderstood inner world.

About this episode

In this conversation, Jess and Imi explore what it means to be emotionally intense in a world that often pathologises depth. They unpack the fine line between finding relief in a diagnosis and over-identifying with it, and why the language we use to describe our inner lives shapes far more than we realise.

Imi's approach is both clinically grounded and deeply humane. The conversation moves across trauma, intuition, relational healing, and the concept of positive disintegration, the idea that inner chaos can be a doorway to growth rather than something to be suppressed or medicated away.

In this episode:

  • Why sensitivity is not weakness, and why we've been taught to see it that way

  • The risk of over-identifying with diagnostic labels like ADHD, autism, and anxiety

  • How to honour intuition in a world that rewards logic and performance

  • The concept of positive disintegration, and why falling apart can be necessary

  • How healing happens through new relational experiences, not just insight

  • Creating a life that genuinely fits your nature

Prompt for reflection:

"What would it mean to stop managing your sensitivity and start designing your life around it instead?"

This prompt asks you to rethink how you relate to your own feelings. Journaling on it can uncover ways your sensitivity could guide decisions, rather than be something to control or hide.
